SPECIAL EDITION CLASSIC IMAGE: RETURN TO THE EXECUTOR

His personal quest to bring his son Luke Skywalker over to the power of the Dark Side now failed-the boy seemingly having chosen the path of self-sacrifice instead- an angry Darth Vader returns to his Super Star Destroyer, the Executor, within his personal shuttle, and which quickly comes to land within one of its large docking bays. A scene from the THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: SPECIAL EDITION of 1997.

With thanks to Chris Baker for the image.

Remember, this footage was actually shot for Return of the Jedi, and the Shuttle, as well as all of it's surroundings, are NOT the inside of the Executor, but actually the second Death Star. They didn't even bother to change any backgrounds and it can be clearly seen that it is the Death Star's hangar, NOT the Executor.

Yes, the studio footage scene with the actors is lifted from JEDI's Death Star II scenes (all too noticeably!), but the prior full length matte plate/model shot before the studio footage, which shows Vader's shuttle moving into final position, is inside a Star Destroyer. I like the way we briefly see the wings forming into shape as it docks down.
