EPISODE I BEHIND THE SCENES: PICTURE ONE - DARTH MAUL GETS IT!

With the release of EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D in cinemas this week, and assuredly gaining a new generation of fans for the STAR WARS SAGA, we thought we'd celebrate with a daily behind the scenes photograph from the making of the film that launched the Prequel Trilogy.

Starting off, it's one of the best scenes in the film, as Nick Gillard watches from inside the Theed reactor room core set as Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi puts pay to the albeit all too brief Sith reign of double lightsaber master Darth Maul (Ray Park) - well, that's what he thought anyway!

An alleged early idea from Lucas and co. for the proceeding prequels was that Ray Park, the physical embodiment of Maul, would come back as a different villain each time (as Pat Roach had done with the Indiana Jones films), but we've never been able to confirm this.

Check out the great interview AFICIONADO had with Nick Gillard about the Prequel lightsaber duels here: http://www.starwarsaficionado.com/f/NICK_GILLARD_EXCLUSIVE_INTERVIEW_2009.pdf

With thanks to LUCASFILM, FOX and SUBSTANCE for the above image.
