THE WONDER, TERROR AND WRATH OF 'PROMETHEUS'

The beginning of our end? PROMETHEUS is coming soon. Images: 20th CENTURY FOX

In space, no one can hear you scream.

So said the ambitious tag line from a film which ultimately lived up to it promises and fearful reputation. Yes, it can only be Ridley Scott's seminal sci-fi/horror masterpiece, ALIEN-truly the dark side antithesis to George Lucas's STAR WARS saga, spawned from that 1977 film's success and made with equal care and attention as to its conception and execution, alongside similar relatively unknown but pedigree casting, that gave birth (in ALIEN's case a chest burst!) to another long running and box office profitable franchise for 20th CENTURY FOX, so far spanning three further sequels and two ALIEN VS PREDATOR video games-esque spin-offs (though the less said about them the better-especially in front of ALIEN series star/heroine Sigourney Weaver!).

Now, after such a long time away, Scott is returning to the genre he helped define, and going back full circle to the original film, as he prepares to unleash PROMETHEUS-a fresh new prequel to his beloved 1979 physical and psychological fright fest. To Scott and the people at FOX it's not really an ALIEN movie, though: rather a big-budget spectacular/adventure into the unknown filled with weighty and original sci-fi concepts that also has organic connections of the most chilling kind to the original ALIEN-   (most notably, from the first major trailer recently seen, the incredible nightmare work of visionary artist H.R. Giger's created alien spaceship and its bone-like interior, all with skeletal "space jockey" pilot, seemingly no longer mummified, about to enter its bloody great laser cannon! There's also what looks like alien seed pods similar to what we've seen to those carrying the creepy face huggers, and the occasional melted human crew members faces that look set to send shivers once more down our terrified spines. C'mon, Ridley, who are you trying to kid? It's an ALIEN film, and with you, its original visualist at the helm, we can't wait to see it!

Space explorers Charlize Theron and Idris Elba.

Along for the ride, or fright of their lives, are scriptwriters Jon Spaihts and LOST's Damon Lindelof, a terrific high powered ensemble international cast (including Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender (currently starring in everything!), Idris Elba and Guy Pearce) and the return of the aforementioned Giger creation-the true stuff of seventies children's nightmares, which has since survived and been enjoyed as a cinematic and genre icon, which, in PROMETHEUS will apparently be recreated as part of a new legacy of terror, amongst several different types of alien life form we've never seen before, though possessing many of the originals bone crushing, head piercing, tail stabbing invincibility's. The film's ending, we hear, will also effectively lead in to the 1979 movie. Might there be a mention of that eventually doomed crew of the commercial towing vessel Nostromo?

Ultimately, a lot rests on PROMETHEUS. Beyond the millions it'll have to recoup at the box office, can it live up to all the expectant dreams and hopes of film and sci-fi fans when it arrives in UK cinemas from 1st June 2012? Will it be the sci-fi/horror adventure that lives up to the prior original ALIEN mythos? Will Ridley Scott help save the sci-fi genre from its current stagnation at the box office and with audiences, and truly come up with something unique, interesting and scary that also takes things up to the next level in terms of imagination and visuals? We'll soon find out, and certainly hope he succeeds!
